‘Change’ Preview

17 September 2007 | Categories: Sugababes | Permalink

Sugababes return with new album Change on October 8 and I’ve had a sneaky listen to some of the finished efforts…

Their first record with Amelle Berrebah is a poptastic effort. Previously the ladies had a huge R&B element to their tunes, now the trio dabble with slabs of rock too. Following up a greatest hits collection is always tough but from the taster I’ve heard Heidi, Keisha and Amelle will silence those who said they’d never reach this stage.

First single About You Now is drenched in buckets of candy-coated hooks and the poppiest Babes single perhaps ever.

Never Gonna Dance Again is a dreamy mid-tempo with a hint of Ibiza chill-out rhythms.

My favourite, Denial, pinches the bassline from One Minute - the best track on Kelly Clarkson’s My December - and includes a lush middle eight solo for Heidi.

Surprise breezes along like a fast car on the LA highway, while My Love Is Pink oozes a special something.

Title track Change is clearly the big hitter future single.

Like Take That re-defined manbands with their comeback, this is Sugababes taking girlband pop up a gear.

With lyrics including: “Ain’t it crazy how you think you’ve got your whole life planned/Just to find out it was never ever in your hands,” personal experiences are clearly steeped in this tune.

With their well documented personal ups and downs and band member swaps, its no surprise the Babes made a track like this.

The eighties guitar riff, surprisingly, works.

Verdict: Spice Girls, you’ve got your work cut out to top this classy comeback.
